With such movies I always wonder how much was acting and how much was real...

There was a Stargate episode once where RDA literally froze his ass off. They had frozen the whole set!

Indeed! One of my favorites. I guess you can guess why ;) Rick is also someone who does the suffering VERY convincingly. Hey, did I ever show you my Holzmichel video? Hope it works:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa8CksRoYmc

The funny thing is, I also read this episode long before I watched it. I had a book from the library with detailed episode descriptions. I had come to the series very late and tried to catch up. So I had it all in my head before I watched it. But luckily, when it said that he was climbing, I saw him climbing the same way he later did. From right to left. Would have messed with my head if it was the other way around ;)

Anything whumpy scores high on my list :P

And I collected all the best scenes neatly in this video ;)

I also love that scene, when they were suffering in the mines while Daniel went crazy, where Jack says "I've had worse" and looks utterly exhausted but yeah, when you think about his time as POW in Iraq, I bet he had much, much worse. There are LOTs of Iraq fics out there.

For a long while I was pondering - since Sam was also working along with the guys there, and seemed to do fine - but then I figured, Jack probably did way more work than the others, to protect his team. As a good leader should. Awww. Now you made me want to go watch that episode.

I TOLD YOU REPEATEDLY TO READ THE STORY BUT YOU NEVER DID AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGH

What a beautiful long trailer! Thank you so much for finding it. I really hope we'll get to see that. If it says "This year" will it be a real movie in the cinema? I thought it was just done by film students and may only be shown in the school or on festivals. If it isn't in the cinema I hope for a DVD at least.

Also, Bill Pullman is getting old LOL (unless they put older make-up on him?)

*hides in shame* I know, I am a terrible novel reader, LOL :P

But gah, that trailer, OMG... Matt just looks soooo beautiful ♥

The makers of Walking Out have shown the trailer both in Cannes and at the Berlin festival trying to get international distributors. Considering how big Matty's name is right now, especially after The Nice Guys, I'm certain they will have no problems releasing the movie globally :D Right now it's in post production and they want to release it sometime in 2017... one of the makers tweeted recently that he has watched the very first cut of the movie :D

Even if it doesn't make it to our cinemas here, it's definitely gonna get released somehow - iTunes, amazon or something, we just have to sit and wait :D
(Reply) (Parent) (Thread) (Link)
[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com on June 8th, 2016 06:55 pm (UTC)
Oh, I didn't know that about the Berlin festival! That's nice. Although obviously I would not want to watch it in German dubbing. So I'd have to hunt for an english copy some way anyway.

It's not a novel, it's just a short story. I was through in half an hour.

So they literally just cut the trailer together? I thought the movie was finished already. No idea how to survive till 2017 - but then I have no idea how to survive till we finally see "Monty" either and that will be even longer. I am just glad that I wasn't around yet during the "Normal Heart" making years!

Oh Matty, what are you doing to us?!? I hope and pray that this movie will find its way across the pond (in any possible (?) way) - I need to know if he's gonna make it or not! And the trailer has pretty much everything I want in a movie set in Montana - stunning landscape shots, human vs. nature, family bonding, and on top of that, an actor who can convey more emotions and messages with his eyes than others with a whole book of words.

Thank you so much, my friend, for sharing the link!! *hugs*

I can't wait to see it all though. It will be interesting how the scenes on the screen match the ones in my head!

Also, if I remember right, there was not really much talking in the story. It was all thoughts and feelings. Will be difficult to show that on the screen.

sherylyn[personal profile] sherylyn on June 16th, 2016 07:26 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I'm thinking there's *got* to have been more added -- for one thing, the trailer shows Matt's character with *his* dad, who's only briefly mentioned in the story, AND there's no way that short story could fill a movie-length film without some serious extrapolation from what's there already.

And Kanarek has been added to the pain, too -- I messaged her as soon as I finished it, and she "had" to know ;-) I know it's going to be epically beautiful, but damn it, I just want a movie with Matt being beautiful without anything "wrong" -- is that too much to ask?? LOL!!

And Kanarek has been added to the pain, too -- I messaged her as soon as I finished it, and she "had" to know ;-)

Huh? How did you manage that? Kudos! I have tried for months LOL

So, since we now can talk openly - who else had seen it coming? Or did you get hit by surprise?

I haven't been able to go back and read it again since that first time. Maybe after I've seen the movie.

sherylyn[personal profile] sherylyn on June 16th, 2016 07:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah, definitely paralleling the generations there!!

LOL Oh, she didn't read it. I just told her the gist of it after I finished it!! LOL!!

I kept thinking it might happen, but I was so thinking of Matty as the dad that I kept trying to talk myself into not believing it! LOL!! (And it didn't help that I read it while I was waiting with my mom at her doctor's appointment, so I was distracted at least part of the time). But as I told K right after I finished it: I reallly wanted to boy to be the hero who saved his dad, and they could actually have a good relationship and the whole nine yards, and not the way it actually happened!! I know I tend to favor happy endings and all, but I also just kept thinking about how the kid had thought of his mom treating him if it happened, and I just... I kept thinking that it would've been interesting to see his mom's input if it *didn't* happen that way, too. (Although, it'd have been an interesting issue between the mom and dad, I'm sure: "What the hell were you doing, taking him out there??!!")

I don't know that I'll read it again, but it does pack a wallop, that's for sure!!

((And side comment: WTF was w/that dead moose?? It never did anything to address who did that!! :-P))

LOL Oh, she didn't read it. I just told her the gist of it after I finished it!! LOL!!

Aw, you shouldn't have. Some things need to be experienced by yourself. It won't have the same impact knowing the outcome already.

I had gotten suspicious that he really hadn't said anything in a very long time. It is difficult to put an exact point of when it happened though.

I hear what you say about happy endings. Maybe somewhere in a different universe it ended your way. It certainly would have changed the relationship to the better. I still wonder though if the father was right that one day the boy will see it all with different eyes and may even want to share with his own son. I am from the city as well and while I do appreciate nature, I also appreciate comfort and running water and want to sleep in my own bed at the end of the day.

The father certainly partly is at fault, in continuing stubbornly even though the weather wasn't the best. A lot of things could have gone wrong.

I guess why it had such an impact for me - there had been recently a real life case where something similar happened. Tourists - were they French? - got lost in one of America's national parks while hiking. It was very hot and they had only one bottle of water left. The parents only took one sip so their son could have two sips. When they were found, the parents were dead and only the boy survived to tell the story. I'm sure it will have a huge impact onto his life.

There are things out there that are bigger than us - we should not push our luck too much.

(since you just recently read it - is the "put the damn phone away" scene in the story? I don't remember that one)

sherylyn[personal profile] sherylyn on June 16th, 2016 08:20 pm (UTC)
Yeah.... that's true. But I knew she wasn't going to read it, so at least that way, she had some idea ;-)

I did, too, and esp. that the boy wasn't trying to feed him, etc., too. I just kept hoping he'd survive somehow, anyway :-P

I think I sort of remember that story of the hikers. It's even worse when things like that happen in real life :-(

I don't remember the bit with the phone -- but I'm thinking the story was probably written before phones for younger people got *so* prevalent. Even ~5 years ago, not *as* many teens (esp. younger teens) would've had cell phones as often. And I seem to remember that the boy seems older in the film than the story, too, so that might also be part of the reason, potentially.
(Reply) (Parent) (Thread) (Link)
[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com on June 18th, 2016 04:16 am (UTC)
The not feeding didn't bother me as much as I know when the body is hurt it is better to fast to not put more stress onto it. You can go a while without eating. He should have at least drank something though.

That's a very good point with the story probably being some years old. It may have been updated for the movie. I just find it a significant point - as it shows that when you are in the wilderness, no cellphone can help you if you don't have reception. There are people that go hiking in the hills with sandals, and suddenly there is a snow storm, and they think as long as I have my phone with me I can call for help.

Apparently there was also a famous case in (Western) Germany in the Fifties or Sixties, where at Easter a teacher went hiking with half of his class. The weather was nice in the morning but suddenly there was heavy snow and they all froze to death.
(Reply) (Parent) (Thread) (Link)
sherylyn[personal profile] sherylyn on June 18th, 2016 04:25 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it wasn't so much that I thought his dad "needed" to eat as much as I just thought it was representative of how bad his dad was that it wasn't even a question (along with drinking, as well). (And I know the whole thing is from the boy's POV, but one thing I wanted to know was if/when his dad knew this was going to kill him. I mean, obviously he knew it was bad, very bad, but I just wondered if he ever really knew what was happening to him. :-( )

Yeah, there are just so many ways that things can "sneak" up on you and endanger you if you don't know a whole lot more than most people even begin to think of when they're out in "nature" like that. And yeah, phones aren't going to help if they have no signal to connect to! :-P We rely on them far more than we ought to in some instances!

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com on June 18th, 2016 04:52 pm (UTC)
If I remember right, he said right in the beginning, that the boy needs to go alone and he stays there. But the boy refused to go. And he also couldn't have droven the car anyway. So in my eyes the Dad basically sacrifices himself for his son's life. I think he knew. It is only logically - the more you move, the more blood you will lose. You need to stay put and keep pressure off that leg. And you need to keep it elevated properly. When dragging him, all the blood is going down. It needs to go up, to the heart.

It's a pretty sad story if you think about it :(

sherylyn[personal profile] sherylyn on June 18th, 2016 04:56 pm (UTC)
It reallllly is pretty heart-breaking, and I somehow think it may be even more so with it "extended" (somehow or other) on-screen. I think he knew he had to go as long as he could, but... I don't know if he thought it would definitely kill him at the time, or if he realized it for sure later, when it took them so long to get to help :-( Either way, it's really sad.

What's even sadder if you think about it - he dies not knowing whether it was worth it. Whether his son made it or not. Imagine that :(

I think "The Normal Heart" has some serious tissue competition here!
